Integumentary Proposal
By: Rodrigo Alvarado, Ethan Rapp, Camille Obert & Beau Thompson
Ideas for our Plan
Our model would be based of mostly of sponges with threading interlaced in between all of the levels of our structure
see separate sheet of paper
our model will show the layers of the skin and will demonstrate
Sponge, wires, string/yarn, glue, colored paper clips, water, pipe cleaners
We will build it through acquiring sponges then attaching them together to show the hypodermis, the dermis, and the epidermis. The sponges will be different colors. We will use wires, string, yarn, or bent paper clips to show the muscle, arteriole, sweat gland, capillaries, fat, and fibroblasts as well as different glands. Also we could use brown or black pipe cleaners to represent the hair.
Biology- shows different layers of the skin and the functions of each layer including the hairs, pores, nerves, and skin. For the hair we will show how it protective sensitive organs. The pores excrete bodily fluids, nerves sense different things through the skin, and the skin protects things from entering different systems.
Issues- sponges might not stay glued together, pipes and wires might not be able to stick through sponges, yarn may not be able to stay on sponges especially when water is applied, need to make sure we have the distinctive colors of different materials to show all the different parts
Special requirements could include purchasing different materials that would not be supplied to us in the classroom area. These items could include sponges, pipe cleaners, wires, and string/yarn. We might also need to purchase items in different colors that we need to show different parts.

Integuementary Model
Our model is based on the integuementary system. It represents the three layers of the skin.
|
The top layer of the skin is the epidermis. This layer is the part that comes in contact with the outside environment. It is the Keratin producing layers that forms a tough, flexible, waterproof covering on the surface of the skin. This layer of the skin secretes waste also known as sweat.
|
The second layer of the skin is the dermis. It contains muscles, sweat glands, hair follicles, nerves, and sebaceous glands. The sebaceous gland is the start of where the secretions begin to enter the epidermis.
|
The third layer of the skin is the hypodermis. The fat contain layer, also known as the subcutaneous layer. We represented the fat with the yellow balloons.
|
Our model represents many functions of the integuementary system. The bottom layer contains balloons that represent the fat. The middle layer contains brown colored in straws the represent hair follicles, pink rubber bands that represent muscles, pulled apart paper clips and drawn in lines represent the nerves and veins. Also the last thing we have in the dermis is the tubes that go into the epidermis that represent the sebaceous gland bringing sweat into the top layer. On the top layer we have many sponges with black dots on them that represents the pores in the skin. In between a few of the sponges we have the the top of the tube where we have water coming up into the sponges making them wet. When they are wet we will demonstrate cooling through a thermometer. Mid project we still needed to add hair follicles to the tops of the dermis and waterproof all layers. We also need to finish our presentations so that we will be prepared for presentation night.
Project Reflection
In the beginning of our project we had to learn many things about the integumentary system along with its functions and what it consists of. In the beginning we planned to stack 3 sponges and stick colored paper clips out of them. This was a horrible idea we soon realized and we made our model out of a shelf containing 3 layers, the exact amount of layers of the skin. Challenges were being able to get the right materials and making our project water proof. Our model worked very well the day of the presentation in class and our presentation was brilliant providing all needed facts. During the presentations our model did not work as well. The one problem was when we demonstrated sweating, our tape, which had been waterproof before started leaking water from the epidermis down to the hypodermis. Although it was not a big deal. The judges and parents seemed to like our presentation very much. Our one and only judge just clapped and told us it was magnificent and he did not ask any questions.
Grand Rounds Activity Paragraph
What Did I Do?
In this activity I role played a patient and a doctor. When I was a patient I pretended to have acromegaly. I had to tell the doctors who were testing me, my symptoms. The symptoms included having overly sized hands and feet, joint pain, etc.

CER
Grave’s Disease
I believe that Sebastian’s group had Grave’s disease because he had trouble breathing, anxiety, and chest pains. Other symptoms were seeing double, high blood pressure, stress, bulging eyes, trouble sleeping, weak muscles, excessive sweat, he is not gaining weight, and he produces more stule. The reasons why he has it is because his thyroid gland is producing much more thyroid hormone which is called hyperthyroidism. Autoimmune problems are caused when your immune system causes disease to attack healthy tissues. This may be one of the reasons why he has Grave’s disease. Although it is more common in females than males. Some big reason that indicates he had Grave’s disease were that he had an enlarged thyroid gland which makes the neck look thick or swollen, as well as eyes sensitive to light, red, and or enlarged to the point that they protrude from their sockets. The last big sign is the thickening of the skin by the legs.To recap I am certain that Sebastian’s group had Grave’s disease.

Grand Rounds Reflection
In this activity we learned a few things. I learned how to find an answer based on evidence and reasoning, and I learned multiple symptoms of various diseases. I learned that the endocrine system was a bunch of glands that produce and regulates many things such as hormones, growth, development, reproduction, sleep, and metabolism.
